Tips on getting started with the genealogy web page.

NOTE: This page is for illustrative purposes only. Inputting of any informaion or trying to retrieve any information has to be done in the menu on the left side of the screen.

On the top left side of the screen, you will see the search area as pictured above. If you click on the "Search" button without entering anything in the "LastName:" or "FirstName:" area, you will get a full listing of all the names in the database. You can narrow your search by entering just a "LastName:" and then click "Search" to get a listing of all the last names that match. Or you can enter just a "FirstName:" and then click "Search" to get a listing of all the first names that match. You can narrow your search even further by entering a "LastName:" and a "FirstName:" and then click "Search" to search for a particular person.

If we would have entered Reindollar for the "LastName:" and David for the "FirstName:", this would be the results of the search. There are a few items to note at this time. The only information displayed is for deceased individuals, unless you are a registered user and are logged in. Right under "Search Results" you will see "Home". Clicking on this will take you back to the home page. "Search" will take you back to the search page to do another search. "Print" will send the information to the printer in a much easier to read format. "Login" will let you log into the program if you are registered and have a password. And "Add Bookmark" will mark this page so you can come back to it later. These 5 items will be displayed at the top of every page to give you the option of using them. Also note that any text that is underlined is a link to go someplace else to see other information.

If we would have clicked on Reindollar, David Emerson in the above example, we would get this page. Most of the information on this page is self explanatory. Remember that clicking on any underlined text will take you to more information for the person or area you click on. At the top of the page, note that "Individual" is highlighted. This indicates you are looking at all the information for that individual. To view the family information for the Father and Mother, click on "Group Sheet" beside the "Family ID" under Father and Mother. To view family information for that persons own family, click "Group Sheet" beside the "Family ID" under Family.

By clicking on the "Ancestors" tab in the above example we would get this page displayed. Note the little red down arrow symbols under the name boxes. Placing your mouse over the red arrow will display more information about that person. On the "Ancestors" tab there are lots of options. The first is "Generations". You can change the number of generations that will be displayed by changing this value. You can also click on the other options and the screen display will change accordingly.

By clicking the "Descendants" tab, this information would display. Note the word "Living" is displayed in some areas. This indicates that person is a living person, and no information is displayed for living individuals unless you are registered and logged in. As before, you can change the "Generations" value to display more or less information. You can also click on the other options and the screen display will change accordingly.

By clicking the "Relationship" tab, this information would display. "Person 1:" is usually populated with the name of the person you are viewing. You can leave it as it is or change it to a different name. To change "Person 1:" or add a name to "Person 2:", click the appropriate "Find" button.

The "Find Person" box will display. You can enter either "Last Name" or "First Name" and click "Search".

When the "Search Results" box displays, click on the person you want to enter for "Person 2:". Now click "Calculate", and the following page will display.

On the left side of the screen is a menu. Most of the items are self explanatory. Not all of the items are in use on this site at this time. If you click on "Videos", you would go to the videos page, but nothing would happen as there are no videos available.

I only touched on the basics of navigating around the genealogy web page. There are many other areas of interest to explore. The "Dates and Anniversaries" on the left side of the screen is an area to find events that happened in a particular time frame. So feel free to explore and have a good time.
